ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE Review

Summer is the season for grilling, and the new ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE will make sure all your meat comes out at the perfect temperature!

Our family recently had the opportunity to review the new ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE. This new gadget boasts some big promises; notably, being “the world’s first one-second instant-read thermometer.” In our experience, many thermometers sound fantastic, but fizzle out and leave us disappointed in real-world use. That’s why we could not wait to test drive the new Thermapen® ONE and find out for ourselves if it really could deliver!

The Problem

Like most people in modern kitchens, we rely on a meat thermometer whenever we’re cooking chicken. This is for obvious reasons: no one wants salmonella. But the ones that we own each have limitations. Either they take too long to read the temperature, making you a hot, sweaty mess with slow-roasted fingers by the time you get a read. Or they’re too small, making them unsuitable for grilling where they would melt or your hands would burn off.

Our fix is to use an oven thermometer, with a long wire that allows you to insert the thermometer and read the temperature from a safe distance. However, this contraption is not our favorite, in the oven or on the grill. It’s bulky, unreliable, and the buttons are complicated. Oftentimes, we end up skipping it and just test the meat’s temperature with a different instant-read thermometer once it’s off the grill. This means we recognize too late that our meat is over-cooked and extra-dry.

With the Thermapen ONE, however, we were able to easily and quickly get the temperature of our grilled chicken. And the angling abilities of the handle ensured that our hands stayed out of the heat. This is the first instant-read thermometer we’ve used that really was instant! There’s no on/off button; just open the thermometer, and it is ready to use. Plus, with its auto-rotating display, whatever angle you put it at, the results will always be right-side-up.
